The Market Linked Deposit (MLD) is an investment that gives you 100% principal protection plus the potential of earning higher deposit returns. This is because the interest you earn will be re-invested into the currency market.

Let's say you have a bullish view of the Australian Dollar (AUD) and want to trade on this view.
- You would first need to place a deposit with Citibank, e.g. US$100,000 for 1 month.
- At a rate of AUD/USD of 0.50, you have a bullish view that the Strike Price for AUD/USD is say, 0.52.
- We offer you a Market Linked Deposit rate of 10% p.a.
- There will be 2 possible outcomes:
- At maturity, AUD/USD is higher than the contracted Strike Price of 0.52
After one month, you will receive :
US$100,000 (your principal)
+ US$ 833 (your interest of 10% p.a.)
US$100,833
In other words, Citibank will pay you 10% p.a. of your deposit for your bullish view on the AUD.
- At maturity, AUD/USD is lower than the contracted Strike Price of 0.52
After one month, your principal deposit of US$100,000 will be returned to you.

Yes. But even if your view is incorrect, you will still keep your principal and lose only the interest you would have earned on the deposit.

You will need a minimum of US$50,000 (or its equivalent) to start.
Tenures range from 2 weeks to 6 months, and you can choose from a range of currencies like USD, AUD, NZD, Euro, STG, CAD and SGD.
Before investing in this, you should have some expectations of what your target returns should be.
Important: Foreign currency investments are subject to rate fluctuations which may provide both opportunities and risks. You may experience a loss when you convert foreign currency back to your home currency. You should therefore determine whether any foreign currency investments is suitable for you in the light of your investment objectives, your financial means and your risk profile. In addition, partial withdrawal is not allowed. Premature withdrawal of full deposit amount is also strongly discouraged. Any pretermination costs incurred will be deducted from the deposit. Market Linked Deposit is not available to U.S. persons.
